Directions
The Courthouse is located at Third Street and Constitution Avenue, Northwest, Washington, D.C. It is located one block west of the United States Capitol. The building faces Constitution Avenue where Constitution and Pennsylvania Avenues have merged. There are two convenient METRO subway stations within walking distance to the Courthouse: Judiciary Square (Red Line) which is located at the east side of 4th Street between D & E Streets and Archives-Navy Memorial (Yellow Line) which is located at 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Effective October 1, 2013, the Constitution Avenue entrance of the E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse will be closed. Visitors may enter the Prettyman Courthouse using the John Marshall Park entrance or may enter through the William B. Bryant Annex using the 3rd Street entrance.
Parking and Transportation
Parking is extremely limited and can be expensive. Therefore, we encourage jurors to use public transportation because court reimbursements will not cover the cost of parking. If you do choose to park, the following parking lots are located within walking distance to the courthouse.
Public Parking
- Located at 440 3rd Street and charges approximately $9.00 to $12.00 per day.
- Located at the intersection of 6th and C Street at 601 North Building. The cost is approximately $10.00 to $12.00 per day.
Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities
Wheelchair Accessibility
- A mechanical lift for wheelchairs or motorized scooters is located at the John Marshall Park entrance.
- Automatic doors for physically challenged individuals are located at the John Marshall Park and Third Street entrances.
- All public elevators are large enough to accommodate wheelchairs.
Restrooms
- Restrooms located on the west side of the building (the John Marshall Park side) on all floors are fully accessible and outfitted with proper door handles, grab bars, lowered sinks, appropriate plumbing fixtures, etc.
- There is a handicapped accessible restroom located in the jury lounge as well.
Security Screening
Screening
All visitors are required to walk through a magnetometer and all bags, briefcases, and backpacks will be screened by an x-ray machine. If you set off the magnetometer as you walk through it, you may be asked to remove your belt, watch, or jewelry.
Luggage will undergo similar screening done by TSA agents for carry-on luggage at airports. Prohibited items include sharp objects, guns and firearms, tools, explosive materials, flammable items, chemicals, martial arts and self-defense items, and sporting goods.
Prohibition of Liquids
Effective Monday, April 5, 2010, all liquids, aerosols, and gels in excess of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) will be prohibited from being brought into the E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse and William B. Bryant Annex. Visitors will be limited to up to three separate containers (3.4 ounces each) per person.
Visitors attempting to enter with prohibited items will be asked to dispose of them in trash receptacles outside the building. Visitors may purchase beverages inside the courthouse at the cafeteria or from vending machines. Visitors who leave the courthouse with a beverage purchased inside the courthouse will not be permitted to reenter with it.
The Lead Court Security Officers, who supervise the Court Security Officers conducting security screening at the entrances, are authorized to make exceptions if a prohibited item is determined to be necessary and required to serve child care, medical, or other special needs. Visitors should advise a Court Security Officer at the screening station, if assistance is required.
Jurors who display their jury summons and judges, court staff, and other building tenants who display their building access cards are exempt from this policy.
